I see so many people who are just surviving in life -- things are hard, work sucks, there’s never enough money. And the scary part is that they don’t expect it to ever be different. This is just how it is, and how it always will be. When you go through life expecting to be unhappy and expecting things to be difficult, that’s exactly what you’re going to get.
Do you live each day maintaining a fairly unpleasant status quo? Maybe there are moments of excitement or brief respites from the monotony, but the vast majority of your time is spent in survival mode -- just trying to make ends meet, get through the day.
Hear me when I say: this is not how it’s supposed to be. Your life has the potential to be fantastic, and the only thing holding you back is your mindset. It is possible to be happy and enjoy every single thing you do. Yes, there’s hard work, but you manage it well, and it’s temporary. Yes, there are unpleasant tasks, but you are happy to do them and know they will be finished soon.
It’s the difference between just getting through the day and living your best life -- the difference between surviving and thriving.
The good news is that you have a choice about how you approach every day, every task, every thought. It’s totally up to you if you feel happy and optimistic or downtrodden and defeated. I know it’s easier said than done sometimes, and we all suffer through difficult times. But there are simple, straightforward ways you can change your daily habits and start creating the positive energy you want to feel all the time.
Honestly, I’ve had countless days when I woke up and just couldn’t figure out how to feel positive. If something was bothering me, or I was facing a big challenge, my natural inclination was to worry and fret until I started having physical ailments. I’ve had to work hard to overcome those negative thoughts and prevent myself from spiraling down into a hole of despair.
I know from my personal experience that you can control your thoughts and improve the way you feel through conscious effort. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Gratitude: Even on the toughest days, when you feel incredibly overwhelmed, you can just start listing everything in your life that is going RIGHT. No matter what you’re faced with, there’s always something you can be thankful for. Your health, food, a bed, a house, clean water, supportive family, clean dishes...anything. The point is to take your attention off of what’s wrong, and put it on what’s right. I promise you that this will immediately shift your perspective.
Tapping: Also called EFT, this is a technique to actually release negative energy from your body. It takes a little practice to get comfortable with it, but it can be a powerful pattern interrupter when negative thoughts are threatening to hijack your attention. This is a great practice to turn to when you’re in a really dark place and can’t even wrap your head around being positive. You articulate your deepest, darkest fears and shortcomings -- the things that really feel unmanageable -- while tapping on meridian points on your face and torso. Many people feel immediate relief and release from this practice. YouTube has some great tutorials for tapping (check out Brad Yates or Nick Ortner).
Visualization: We all do this naturally -- fantasize about our desires and let scenarios play out in our head. Once you develop a clear idea of what you want -- the peaceful life or successful career or happy marriage, or whatever it is that you’re working toward -- think about it. Picture it. Put yourself in that place of joy and prosperity and success. As much as you can, think about what it is you want and get yourself feeling those wonderful feelings of having it. You attract the energy you generate, so this is the express lane to getting what you want.
Nothing in your physical world can make you happy. This is a little depressing, isn’t it? I remember when I first started to understand this, I was really upset. If money, a different body, or material things weren’t going to make me happy, what was? For a brief moment, I felt really hopeless.
But then I started to realize the good news: happiness comes from within, and you have total control over how happy you are. AND, the best part is, you can make yourself happy right now, with what you have, with who you are, in the body you currently have, with the bank account balance you have today. Isn’t that incredibly exciting? No more waiting for something to happen that’s finally going to make you happy. You can do it yourself, starting now.
You have complete control over whether or not you enjoy your life -- it’s totally up to you. I suggest you get started right now.
